First Sunday of Lent

On the First Sunday of Lent, we hear how Jesus is led into the desert and tempted by the devil (Lk 4:1-13). This passage reminds us that in the face of temptation, God’s Word is our anchor. Each time Jesus is tested, He responds with Scripture, showing us that when we root ourselves in God’s truth, we can overcome the enemy’s lies.

In the first reading (Dt 26:4-10), the people of Israel are called to remember God’s saving action—He freed them from slavery in Egypt—and to offer Him the first fruits of their harvest. Likewise, we are invited to remember how God has acted in our own lives, and to respond with gratitude and trust.

St. Paul (Rom 10:8-13) then reminds us that true salvation comes from believing in our hearts and confessing with our lips that Jesus is Lord. During Lent, we are called to deepen this profession of faith by turning away from sin and humbly recognizing our dependence on God.

In this holy season, let us follow Jesus’ example of faithfulness in trials, remember God’s past goodness in our own story, and recommit ourselves to living out our faith with sincerity and steadfastness.
